Injection Mold Components

Generally, just looking at the exterior of the mold, it is really hard to pridict what are contain in the mold. Eventhough the production technology nowadays are more afvance, the process of making a mold with accuracy is still a challenging task. The machineries and measuring devices need to be ensure that the tolerance are in the acceptable range and the understanding on the structure of the mold is aslo very important.

In designing a mold, there are lots of factors impact to the process such as the budget, point, curve, angle which are complicated. Besides from the factors above, the mold need to be design to be user friendly and easy to use in the mass production stage. The cycle time and cavities of the mold also important factors that impact to the production. During the research and development process, these factors must be take into consideration to ensure that the products would worth with the cost of investment.

The image above is the side view of a typical plastic injection mold which consists of following parts:

1. Fix Clamping Plate or Fix Side Plate 

This is the top plate of the mold in this side view. This plate would work as clamping plate between the cavity side of the mold and the injection machine. This plate is the plate that the melted plastic resin would go through in order to enter to the mold.

2.Runner Stripper Plate

This plate is design for the runner of the parts. If this plate is missing, the plastic part would be really hard to eject from the nozzle. This plate also work as a route for the liquid resin to go through.

3.Fix Cavity Plate

This plate also work as a route for the liquid resin to go through. The design of this plate would be based on the point that the plastic resin are designed to enter the part and it also form up the external of the plastic parts.

4.Moving Core Plate

This plate would be the main plate that form up the shape of the part. It would form up internal face of the plastic part. In addition, the cooling system of the mold would be design on this plate in order to form as the part that required. The position of the cooling system on this plate need to take into consideration during the designing process in order to get the part that have proper shape, and contraction as designed.

5.Support Plate

This plate would normally be used with larger scale of plastic mold in order to support the weight and tensile of the metal. This plate could reduce the impact of the pressure that might make the mold become bend.

6.Spacer Block

This plate is to support the moving plate and support plate. These block is to support the ejector set. The height of these blocks would be based on the eject range of the parts.

7.Ejector Retainer Plate

This plate would be the plate that retain ejector set of the mold and it also work as a guide for the ejector set to eject with accuracy.

8.Ejector Plate

The ejector set of the mold would be install on this plate while this plate is install connected with the ejector retainer plate. This plate also work as part that receive the eject pressure from the injection machine during the operation.

9.Movable Clamping Plate

This is the bottom plate of the mold that would be use to calmp the core plate of the mold to the injection machine. The designers need to design this plate to have enough strength for the operation, and be aware of the factors from the injection process. The sizing need to be design according to the injection machine in order for the users to be able to use it conveniently, and effectively.
